Treat Yo Self Day

(As I am still trying to find my groove, this is a very different style of blog than I usually write. Bear with me. I would LOVE your feedback.)

As someone who spends copious amounts of money on books, weird things and food, the concept of saving is an abstract one to me.

I have a terrible habit of effectively flushing money down the toilet.

I’m the friend who wants to go out to lunch with you, but can only go to Maccas for their cheap menu.

However, I have reached the point where not being able to afford anything really is a problem. I am soon striking out on my own in the big, wide world and I am also saving to move overseas – all things I can’t do without those dollar dollar bills, son. (Did I really say that?)

I have a new savings account that I try not to touch too often, and I also bought this money box that I can’t get into without cutting open. This is a foolproof way of saving money because whenever I find myself wanting to take money from it, the idea that I will have to find something to open it with, then open it, then put the remainders in the bin really ticks off my lazy side. So far it’s a big hit.

I even used a $100 container to inspire me to be a millionaire. Unfortunately it makes me inspired to put all my money in, leaving me with nothing when I need to pay for something.

But I’m never one for moderation, so saving has seen me literally buy nothing. I decided, therefore, to have a Treat Yo’ Self Day, inspired by Parks and Recreation.

If I was going to spend money, I decided I needed to have something to spend it from. Hence, my first purse purchase. Now, I wear pyjamas as often as I can, and my ‘nice’ clothes consist of hippie pants and ironic shirts. So having a purse or a handbag never appealed to me. But I now have both and let me tell you, I recommend it to everyone. It makes me feel like James Bond, even though I can’t picture him with a clutch.

The secret compartments are exciting me so much, I want to find cool things to hide in them.

Possibly I am not ready for adulthood.

I always gravitate towards food and books. The only question when I shop is which will come first.

I bought three books on Treat Yo’ Self Day, to add to my already-packed book shelf.

I’m really excited about these books! I’m not used to coming from the movies to the books, but for me the film of Perks of Being a Wallflower came at such a perfect time, and has really stayed with me. I have just started the book and already I’m falling in love with it.

Also, I love Leo’s face popping up there. It’s like: “Oscars? Anyone have any oscars for a Mr. Di Caprio? ‘Course not. Screw you all.”

I used to have a very definitive taste in books, but as I get older my tastes are becoming much more varied. Essentially I enjoy good writing and emotional depth in characters.

The food came soon after, with a jumbo Tim Tam shake and a choc chip cookie which I found the crumbs of down my bra later that night. So, thanks crumbly cookie.

I also had the fun adventure of going to the Polka Dot Vintage Markets at Scarborough beach for the second time in a row, this time with Tahlia.

The markets are gorgeous, with a really lovely atmosphere. The wind was howling, but the sound of the waves crashing behind us was nice enough to silence that.

I like vintage clothes on other people, but don’t really tend to go towards them myself.

I mean, I wore my Breakfast Club shirt to the markets, where I was drowning in a floral sea.

The markets had some amazing things, and some amazing people. There were market sellers there who had hand bought their items around Europe and Asia when they were young. Now elderly, they were passing on the one-of-a-kind items.

True to form, however, I stood among beautiful clothing and awesome bags, but bought only these three things:

I have no regrets. Not even the goth duck. Strongly considering creating a shrine to it. I love it that much.

Last year I went early with a friend and a shop owner asked us to help set up her stall for half an hour in return for a bunch of free vintage clothes and bags. I still love the bag I got:

All in all, it was great. Between tension at home and the transition between school and uni, it was really nice to break out and have a Treat Yo Self Day. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone having a bad day. Of course, my purchases are always a little oddball, so your day might be a little different to mine. Either way, it can be really lovely to just enjoy your own company and say ‘yes’ rather than ‘no’.

Yours truly,
A Well Treated Girl.

P.S. Who needs a guy when shopping/markets answers all your needs?

P.P.S. I bought a cupcake at the markets that had chocolate clinkers baked into it. Yep. That happened.

P.P.P.S. While I had a lovely day, my puppy did not – and is feeling much less manly, if you catch my drift.
